As part of a graduate journalism project at American University, I produced a trailer, single episode, six-part episode outline and a marketing and monetizing plan for this podcast.
Every city has its story to tell.
In Washington, D.C., there’s the story that we all know—the one about the country’s movers and shakers, and of bills that are advocated, authored, lobbied and signed.
But then, there’s the story of its people—the ones who have lived there and carved their legacy in its inroads. This podcast is about them.
In a six-part series, Vintage D.C. uncovers the unique history of the District, beyond the marble pillars of the city's pomp and circumstance. We’ll focus on the iconoclastic, the artistic and the unexpected—all the things that go against the grain of D.C.'s suit and tie reputation.

Episode 1: Drag, Burlesque, Queer Art—It’s the 1920s in Georgetown
On the pilot episode of Vintage D.C., we take a look at trans and gender-nonconforming histories in late 19th and early 20th century Washington through the lens of one socialite and one outcast. The famed owner of Georgetown's Halcyon house, Albert Clemens, lived alone in his five-story mansion, allegedly with his carpenter. But what local historian Jennifer Porter-Lulu uncovered is that Clemens carved a corner in D.C.'s most historic neighborhood for drag shows and queer masquerade balls during the golden age of the Prohibition. On the other side of society, there was William Dorsey Swann—a newly-emancipated slave from Maryland who moved to D.C. for a new life—and that new life lead him to become the first recorded drag queen in American history.
