Jeff Mills Photography

Hey there! My name is Kelly, and I'm a bilingual multimedia journalist based in New York, NY, by way of Washington, DC, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Santiago, Chile.
As the Managing Editor at Frame, I lead the newsroom's editorial mission by surfacing undercovered human interest and feature stories that help readers understand broader issues in the news through photo- and video-driven visual formats. I am also a freelance reporter for Heatmap News, where I cover the international and geopolitical scope of climate change.

During my tenure at Foreign Policy magazine, I grew the company's audience engagement and social media infrastructure to record-breaking highs. I also reported on the 2021 U.S. troop withdrawal from Kabul and its profound impact on Afghan society, Japan's strategic shift towards nuclear power amidst political instability, and the effects of climate change on the tradition of Arctic mushing in Anchorage, Alaska, among other flashpoints.

I hold a Master's degree in Journalism & Digital Storytelling from American University and have been a nominee for the American Society of Magazine Editors NEXT award, which celebrates the achievements of journalists under 30.

Prior to FP, I was a digital producer at American University and a videographer at the World Bank. In these capacities, I oversaw all aspects of digital storytelling and editorial content for six of AU's professional programs while concurrently producing and editing compelling video content highlighting the World Bank's financial management sector. Additionally, I reported for WAMU's DCist, where I covered the discriminatory impact of United Methodist laws on LGBTQ ministers, as well as the profound challenges faced by LGBTQ performers in Washington, DC, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Media Interviews & Conferences
In March of 2020, WAMU's All Things Considered Host Jonathan Wilson spoke with me to discuss my reporting on how online communities and mutual aid groups are helping LGBTQ entertainers as businesses shut down amid early COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.
In October of 2021, I was a featured speaker for the international think tank Meridian International Center's three-week-long Central Asia Media Exchange Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State. My hour-long session provided an overview of emerging trends and challenges in the U.S. media industry today for a group of journalists and newsroom leaders from across Central Asia (namely Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan).
During Asian American and Pacific Islander Awareness Month in May 2021, I moderated a panel attended by Texas Tribune editor in chief Sewell Chan, DEI scientist Milla DeChant, and former diplomat and current senior fellow at the Center for American Progress Glen Fukushima to discuss global media coverage of the Asian and Pacific Islander diaspora and institutional leadership through the lens of diversity, equity and inclusion. This panel discussion was attended by the majority of Foreign Policy magazine's company, including its CEO and publisher.
